Introduction

Good people of Russia!  Has anyone searched for the lost hybrids of I.V. Michurin?  Only a few of them are in the United States such as  Actinidia 'Ananasnaya'  and a few Sorbus hybrids:  'Likyornaya' and 'Granatnaya'.

For readers of English, please see the book Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin - Selected Works [1949, Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow] to read of all the wonderful plant creations developed over 60 years.

Michurin's methods of plant development differed from that of Luther Burbank (1849-1926):

"Both in the foreign press and in our Soviet press, my work has been frequently compared with that of the American fruit grower Luther Burbank.  I consider this comparison a wrong one.  My methods of work are different from those of Burbank, as it was already pointed out long before the Revolution by those American professors who used to visit my nursery systematically  every year.  The same is also true as regards the organization of work  of other private workers in this field in Western countries as well as of the state experiment stations , among which hardly any can be found that would work exclusively on originating new improved fruit-plant varieties." (p. 485)

This web site can be expanded by adding color pictures of the found Michurin hybrids.  Please contribute photos of these plants!

Additionally, a summary in Russian would be helpful.

Research Scientist

Roy Wiersma, Ph.D. has found a substantial number of American plant breeder Luther Burbank's hybrids.  Roy is based in southern Calilfornia and is in the process of establishing a research station to feature all of the lost Burbank plant hybrids.  He would like to see the same done in Russia with all of the lost I.V.Michurin plant hybrids.  It would be fantastic to see the establishment of a Michurin plant research station in Russia and many more of Michurin's hybrids cultivated in the United States.
